An engagement is definitely something to celebrate. It is not mandatory to have an engagement party so if budget is an issue you can opt to skip it and announce your engagement in a simpler way. On the other hand an engagement party is a great way for family and friends to toast the future bride and groom and for family and friends to get to know each other.
Usually the bride-to-be's parents will host the engagement party, but any family member or friend may do so as well. If the brides and grooms families live in different countries or parts of the country, the parents may each host a party in their city.
