Signing the Contract

Here are a couple tips to keep in mind before signing any contract.

> Make sure you shop around before you sign a contract with any vendor. You want to be pretty much certain this is the vendor you want to go with.

> Read the contract carefully. Ask questions if there is anything you don't understand or are unsure of. It's better to ask then to later say "but I thought this meant...".

> It's ok to ask to change the contract if you feel uncomfortable with the wording or any of the points. But the vendor must agree. Both parties to the contract should initial any changes made.

> If the contract is too long, take it home to read. There should be no pressure put upon you to sign something you don't understand. You may even ask the vendor to email or fax you a copy of the contract so you can read it before your meeting together.

> Do not rely on spoken promises. Everything should be included in the contract.

> Do not sign any contract until all the blanks are filled in.

> Many vendors require deposits to save the date. Make sure you want to go with that vendor before you give any deposit. Most deposits are non-refundable.

> Before you give a deposit, get a written contract with the deposit amount, date, time, company name, and a detailed description of what is required of your vendor.

> If possible, pay all payments by credit card. If anything goes worng, you have a greater chance of getting your money back than if you paid by cheque or cash.

> Never pay the full amount upfront when booking several months ahead. A vendor may close or go out of business and take your money with them. Stay away from vendors who insist you pay the full amount up front.

> It's safest to pay the smallest deposit amount you can bargain with the vendor.

> Get copies of all contracts you sign.
