Wedding Cakes, Catering, and Wine Tips

Choose the perfect wine for your wedding.

(continued)

Ask for photos of previous weddings to see how attractive looking their food setups are.

Never hire an unknown caterer unless you checked the references, sampled the food, obtained a written contract with everything that will be provided, or seen a portfolio.

Go for the alternative cheaper choices such as chicken instead of beef, carrots and broccoli instead of asparagus.

Choose deserts that will not melt before they reach the guest tables. If you are going to have a wedding cake, you don’t need a very extensive and extravagant dessert table unless you know that you’ll have more people than wedding cake slices.

After you choose your menu, go for a food tasting. This is also a perfect time to ask questions in regards to your menu.

Find out about alcohol packages. Some reception sites and caterers include an open bar in the package and many don’t. If you have to pay for the bar at the end of the night according to how much your guests consumed, it can become pretty expensive. An open is the most gracious approach because you really don’t want your guests to have to pay for anything at your wedding. The downside of an open bar is that people are more likely to get very drunk. You may instead want to go with a limited bar where you can choose which alcohol is to be served and decide on specific consumption times such as: during cocktail hour and after dinner.

A cash bar is never a good idea since it’s too controversial. When you invite your friends for dinner, you never ask them to pay for the alcohol so why would it be ok at your wedding?

There are many other ways to cut costs without going cheap on your guests.

If you’re going to have a lot of kids and pre-teens at your wedding why not prepare some cool non-alcoholic drinks. Decorate the glasses with cool glass color paints and ask the bartended for any ideas for interesting non-alcoholic drinks.

Instead of numbering your tables, come up with some fun names such as; flowers, landmarks, famous works of art, romantic movies, birds, Chinese symbols, constellations, or ice cream flavours. Come up with some of your own special and meaningful names.

Choose regionally grown or raised food to ensure freshness and availability. Take also into consideration the season when choosing dishes. Pumpkin soup will be more readily available in the fall than in the spring. Using hometown specialties can also be a great way to personalize your meal and let out of town guests experience new tastes.
