Wedding Cakes, Catering, and Wine Tips

Make the wedding food and cake an art.

THE WEDDING CAKE

Don’t choose a cake style till you decide on the style of your gown and reception. They will have great impact on what kind of design and color of cake you will choose.

Don’t choose the flavour of your wedding cake without tasting it first. Taste test different flavors to make sure you choose the best one.

It’s a good idea to taste the cake after it’s been out of the fridge a while to see how the filling will taste. At the reception the cake will be out for many hours so you want to make sure it will still taste good.

If you can’t decide on the flavour, make each tier a different one. This way the guests will have an assortment to choose from.

Ask the baker if you can only choose from a fixed selection of cake designs or if it’s possible for the baker to work with you to make a unique design. Also find out how the baker establishes the cake price. Is it by slice, tiers, filling flavours? Do they supply a cake knife or is there an extra fee? Do they deliver the cake and set it up or do you have to do it yourself?

An important issue is to find out if the cake designer meets the local health department standards. Some reception venues will refuse to serve a cake by an unlicensed baker.

Your wedding cake does not have to be the traditionally baked cake. Use your imagination. You can use cupcakes, cookies, muffins on a tiered platter. Decorate them with sprinkles, flowers, or other creative décor.

Some bakeries provide fake cakes that you can use for display at your reception. This way you can serve any cake that you like and keep it in the fridge till it’s ready to be eaten.

CATERING

When deciding on the style of dinner you want at your wedding, consider the time of day you will be serving food. You don’t want to serve dinner at an early morning reception.

A buffet can work any time of the day. Doing a buffet can save you money on wait staff since your guests do all the leg work. The food stays hot longer since it’s in heated containers. The downside could be if you have to rent the buffet equipment. Elderly persons may have problems getting to the food and waiting in line.

Some reception locations provide in-house food and catering that is included in the price of the hall rental. Some may not even have a kitchen so you may need to use catering services. If you want to use home made food, inquire first if it’s permissible in the hall because many won’t allow it due to health standards.

Ask the potential caterer if they have a license. It’s important because that means they have met health department standards and have liability insurance.

Find out if the cater provides wait staff, tables, basic table linens, chairs, plates, napkins, and silverware or do you have to rent the equipment yourself?
